Women’s next question when faced with ovarian cyst is the possibility of bearing a child. Polycystic ovaries refers to a number of immature follicles found in the ovaries.

Each time the ovulation process occurs, the follicles release the egg cell for fertilization. This means that the egg cells are mature enough and ready for the whole pregnancy process. In a polycystic ovary, the egg in the follicle does not become mature. This results to the egg cell   remaining inside and not released for fertilization and implantation. The next ovulation may yield the same result until there is an accumulation of immature eggs inside the ovaries.
The effect of this is vital to women because of the high probability of difficulty of bearing a child. The accumulated immature eggs result to hormonal imbalance and disruption of the whole ovulation process. When the estrogen hormone remains to be high all the time, there will be no release of egg cell by the ovaries. And with this, no ovulation takes place and there will be zero probability of fertilization. Hormonal imbalance is seen when women does not have regular periods of menstruation.

How is the case similar to the ovarian cysts? Simple. When multiple ovarian cysts are found in the ovaries, it will cause the same hormonal imbalance and disruption of the ovulation process. If such occur, there will be possibility that bearing a child is difficult as well.

The presence of ovarian cyst is one of the reasons why women have polycystic ovaries. Because the ovarian cyst occupies the space inside the ovary and thrives on the hormones for its nourishment, there is depletion on the part of the maturing egg cell inside the follicle.

How is this treated?

Hormonal treatment is done to cease the ovulation process for a while. This means preventing another immature egg to accumulate in the ovaries or preventing another possible formation of an ovarian cyst.  Then the accumulated immature are seemingly scraped in a surgery.

Ovarian cysts are removed from the ovary to attempt restoration of the normal ovulation process. In this way, the ovaries are saved and continue to produce egg cells. The woman  with history of polycystic ovaries will be advised for a fertility work-up and take medicines that will help aid in the maturation of the egg cells.
