Ovarian cyst are sacs in the ovaries which contains fluid, blood or tissue. These are formed after ovulation process where the follicles that contain the egg cell fail to diminish after they release the egg for fertilization. This can happen to all women who are in age-bearing stage during ovulation. However, most of them are benign in nature.

If the ovarian cyst remains to be around 2cm in diameter, it will not put worries to a woman. There will no presence of discomfort felt while the cyst is present. It is only when the cyst becomes larger that poses anxiety to a woman. The woman begins to feel dull pain at her lower abdomen. As the cyst progresses in size, the pain and discomfort also progresses with it. Physically, the lower abdomen of the women starts to bulge like that of a pregnant woman. Weight gain is also noted with this and urgency in urination is more frequent that before. The bowel movement becomes difficult for the woman as well. As the ovarian cyst grows, it impedes functions of more organs. Irregular menstruation is observed and pain during intercourse is noted.

If pain becomes intolerable to the woman and there is a presence of bleeding, the ovarian cyst may have ruptured. If patient’s temperature increased as having fever, the complications of the rupture may have lead to infection.
At an early stage, it is a must that woman respond promptly. As soon as ultrasound has diagnoses ovarian cyst, ask the doctor what best treatment is possible. There are remedies for the discomfort and treatment for ovarian cyst which your doctor can discuss about.

Manifestation of pain can be dealt with pain medication. Pregnant woman has to be cautious as some of these medicines has side effect unborn child. Heat therapy will also help relax the abdominal muscles and relieve pain. At early stage, hormone therapy is usually recommended to help diminish the ovarian cyst. However, if the detection of the ovarian cyst was late and that it has already grown to a size greater than 4cm in diameter, aggressive treatment such as surgical removal is recommended. These surgeries are done though opening the abdomen and removing the ovarian cyst (laparotomy with cystectomy) or removing the ovarian cyst through small incision in the abdomen and guided imagery (laparoscopic cystectomy). The type of surgery will be based from what the woman and the doctor has together agreed upon
