Ovarian cysts form usually after ovulation process. When the follicle that encloses the eggs do not disappear , like they normally do, they are filled with water and blood instead. Once these sacs are filled and they grow around 2cm, they  become ovarian cyst. Most of them are harmless and benign. Most are also functional which means they were formed after a normal ovulation process and not because of any disease.

When an ovarian cyst left inside the ovary, it continues to exist even at the next ovulation process. There is also a possibility that after the next ovulation, another ovarian cyst may be formed. This paves way on multiple ovarian cyst found even in one ovary.

This understanding is the reason why hormones are used as one of the treatment for ovarian cyst. Hormones are taken by woman to stop ovulation process. If the ovulation is halted, no possible ovarian cyst will be formed. Those ovarian cysts previously diagnosed will be give time to diminish as they normally do. Once the ovarian cysts disappeared through this method, the hormonal therapy will be used to regulate the ovulation process of the woman.

Hormonal therapy is done prior to suggesting surgery for ovarian cysts smaller than 4cm in diameter. This is not recommended when the ovarian cyst is more than the size of a regular orange fruit. But this is a good option for those who would want the ovarian cyst gone without having going through the fear of surgery.

Therefore, it is essential that the woman have herself checked at an earlier stage so that conservative treatments  such as Hormonal therapy are done rather than the aggressive ones.  Good prognosis is also possible with early detection of ovarian cyst.
