Ovarian cysts occur in women for women of child-bearing age. It occurs after ovulation process where the corpus luteum, after releasing the egg cell for fertilization, is filled with fluid instead of shrinking again.

However, a small percent can be accounted when the cyst is still formed when the woman is already in her post menopausal period.  At menopausal stage, the he ovaries cease to produce eggs which means that the ovulation process also is halted. However, there are women whose  corpus luteum continues to exist and with this, fluids enter the sac and form ovarian cyst. This is the reason why even at age of menopause, ovarian cyst is still possible.

When the post-menopausal ovarian cyst is diagnosed, it will be noticeable when the ovarian cyst grows in size. A feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen is felt by the woman and discomfort is present during bowel and bladder emptying.
However, since the ovarian cyst has occurred after age of child-bearing, it can no longer be classified as functional. This means that the cyst has to be determined whether benign or cancerous in nature. From then, the course of   treatment will be identified. Women, having identified having ovarian cyst at  this age should  have themselves checked right away. The delay of checking may be detrimental to one’s health.

Once identified, the removal of post-menopausal ovarian cyst is recommended. The age and the capacity of the body will determine which type of surgery is applicable to the woman. The surgeries can either be laparotomy (open surgery) or laparoscopy (through small incision and guided imagery). Sometimes, if the post-menopausal ovarian cyst has affected its adjacent  areas, hysterectomy or removal of the uterus is recommended. The total removal of the female reproductive system or Total Abdominal Hystero- Bilateral Oophorectomy is recommended if the complications are extensive than what is expected. This procedure includes removal of the both ovaries, fallopian tubes and the uterus.

Therefore, the age of menopause does not mean that women will not have ovarian cyst. Although, studies show few cases but still, it denotes the possibility of having it at a later stage. It is a must that women should still undergo ultrasound to check the integrity of their reproductive system. Post-menopausal ovarian cyst should not pose threat as one enjoys that particular age of comfort. Once diagnosed, it should be taken out before it persists to a much serious health problem.
