OVARIAN CYST and PREGNANCY - What do I need to know about cysts during pregnancy ?
Women who have ovarian cyst can still be pregnant. However, ovarian cyst pregnancy and ovarian cyst is not good news. This is because, pain brought about by ovarian cyst is heightened at the time of ovarian cyst pregnancy. This may cause the ovarian cyst to rupture and cause bleeding. If bleeding occurs, hemorrhage and infection will most likely be possible. There are several accounts also that led to premature labor and miscarriage because of bleeding which is the worst fear of all pregnant women.
During pregnancy, there are cysts that are not helpful for the pregnant woman. The cystadenoma which is found in the walls of the ovary can grow to its maximum length of 12 inches and cause excruciating pain to a pregnant woman.
Another type is the ovarian cyst from a lining of the uterus or to what is referred as endometrioma. Due to the stress brought about by labor and deliver, this ovarian cyst is highly possible to rupture causing pain and bleeding to the woman. This cyst, unless taken out, grows as there is an influx of hormones preparing the uterus for pregnancy.
There are conservative methods in controlling pain for pregnant women. Pain relievers are to be consulted with the doctor first at it may pose side effects to the unborn child. Relaxation methods such as breathing exercises, walking and recreational activities can help decrease symptoms of pain.
With this, it is most important for women to have themselves subjected to ultrasound prior to pregnancy because surgical interventions are best done prior to pregnancy. However, in the instances that the cyst is already diagnosed when the woman is already pregnant, surgery is best done during the second trimester.
The surgery required even during pregnancy will be removal of the ovarian cyst. When the ovarian cyst are more than 2.5 cm, then they are usually recommended for removal. The ovarian cyst surgery done can be either cystectomy through open surgery or laparoscopic cystectomy or through small incisions. After the cyst has been removed, the specimen will be sent for biopsy to determine whether the ovarian cyst is cancerous or not.
