Signs of Ovarian Cyst - Abdominal Pains of Ovarian Cyst and What to Do?
Signs of Ovarian Cyst - Lower abdominal pains, feeling of heaviness and nausea are among the common symptoms of a woman who has ovarian cyst. However, there are several diseases that has the same manifestations such as appendicitis, crohn’s and other gastrointestinal problems. Therefore, it is necessary to have an ultrasound to confirm the presence of ovarian cyst.
However, abdominal pains do not get to be present when the size of the ovarian cyst is not greater than 2 cm. Assessment on abdominal size is not difficult since one can immediately see the change. Although most ovarian cysts are benign and functional, it can still be the main cause why there is presence of lower abdominal pain.
During these episodes, the women can take prescribed pain relievers such as ibuprofen. For pregnant women, it is best to consult the doctor first to prevent side effects of the drug to the unborn child. Pain in pregnant women with ovarian cyst should be controlled to avoid occurrence of premature labor contractions or premature labor. If the pain is tolerable, breathing continuously through the mouth will help the abdominal muscles to relax. Drinking warm fluids will also help ease the abdominal pain. For non-pregnant women, light abdominal massage can also be a way of relieving abdominal pain.
When the abdominal pains are present, the woman should sit down and have her back rested in approximately 45 degrees angle or in semi-sitting position. If the woman is pregnant, have her both legs placed on a stool to promote further relaxation of the abdomen.
When the abdominal pain begins to increase even after taking pain relievers or positioning comfortably, prepare to go to the nearest hospital. Excruciating abdominal pain will most likely indicate rupture of the ovarian cysts. Immediate medical attention is needed to prevent massive blood loss, infection and Hemorrhagic shock.
Accurate assessment of abdominal pain can be a life saving tool for women who has ovarian cyst. Any signs of bleeding will also help decide that it’s time to go to the hospital for medical interventions. Other signs that will further confirm emergency action are increased vital signs except for blood pressure and change in level of consciousness.
Abdominal pains are subjective in nature, which means, only the woman in pain will be able to describe the pain. It is a must that she knows the difference of discomfort, each time abdominal pain occurs. Knowledge on this will help decrease anxiety and hasten focus on care. If symptoms continue to persist amidst all interventions, it is best to seek medical consultation to prevent a more serious complication.
