Women with ovarian cyst normally wants it removed right away, even through hysterectomy, of the cyst have grown larger enough to have affected the uterus. Ovarian cysts are fluid filled sac found in the uterus which are capable of growing km 1 cm to 17cm in diameter.  Women of reproductive age usually has this cysts after they ovulate.
This cysts are mostly benign but as they grow larger, symptoms such as pain in the lower abdomen begins to bring discomfort to woman. Women complain of pain during bladder and bowel movement and during sexual intercourse. Some women, has noticeably large lower abdomen upon physical assessment.

These spurt of growth also may affect the uterus.  The  cysts grows at a larger size that it may occupy the space where the uterus lie. This makes pregnancy for the woman possible because instead of the uterus  in proper place and space for the growing fetus, the ovarian cyst  blocks it.  Hysterectomy, which means removal of the ovaries and the uterus, is not the first surgery which the doctors will recommend.  Once it is done, the woman will no longer be capable of bearing a child. However, at rare cases especially when necrosis of the ovarian cyst is noted or dying of the ovarian cyst is noted and it had affected the faculties of the uterus, hysterectomy is advised. Women who has ovarian cancer also are recommended with this type of surgery. It can be done by totally removing the two ovaries and the uterus or saving one ovary and the fallopian tube of the woman.

Hysterectomy is done through laparotomy or  opening the abdomen. The patient is placed on general anesthesia and made to sleep the whole time. Once the abdomen is open, all bleeding veins are clamped and other organs are pushed aside for a better view of the uterus and the ovaries. The clamps will also be used to impede the blood circulation of the ovaries and the uterus. Then, the uterus is taken out by cutting it from the walls through surgical blade or cautery pen. If the surgery is total removal, it means that the ovaries and the fallopian tubes are also removed. Once the organs are out of the abdomen, suturing will be done for closure of the abdomen.

Women after surgery will be monitored closely for signs of bleeding , infection ad pain. They will be advised to stay 3-4 days in the hospital premises. They are advised to resume activities gradually for faster  wound healing and prevention of further problems.

Women who has not been pregnant do not entertain the idea because of their desire to be pregnant. It is usually those women who has kids and yet has an untreated ovarian cyst who agrees to hysterectomy. But there are still a few who opposes because of the feeling of “ incompleteness” after the surgery and the fear of having sexual urges decreased. It is best to study well the surgery for the woman to be physically and psychologically prepared for hysterectomy.
